"This book is a short tutorial in C# that an experienced programmer (in other languages) could work through in a few hours. I don't think it explains things well enough for a beginner "introduction to programming", but it has more explanation than needed for a "language in a nutshell" reference. So it might be a nice handbook for a teacher to use in the classroom as lecture notes, at a much lower cost than professionally-published textbooks. The book is apparently a one-person effort and suffers from a lot of typos. Also, it seems it was designed as an e-book and ported over sloppily, with text like "click here" appearing on the pages, and pages too small to fit the code samples. I'm giving it 3 stars to balance out some of the existing reviews which are obviously fakes, or maybe are posted by the author's parents. This is a simple and adequate introduction the language, but could be much improved."

• If you are a beginning programmer wanting to learn .NET windows programming, this book is the perfect introduction to C#. It is too basic for experienced programmers, but it is easy to follow and all the concepts are explained very well. I can highly recommend this book for someone just starting out with C# programming.

• I think this is such an important topic, I was super excited to read this book when it came out. But ultimately it was difficult to read and didn't grow my competence in this space.
  
  Writing
  I felt like each paragraph was written on post-it notes, confusingly assembled, spliced with cute illustrations, and mixed with anecdotes called out in a different color. It seems like a randomly assembled set of blog posts. I had a hard time understanding how each paragraph and section built on each other. Yes, maybe they were related, but I wanted growth, expansion, to a crescendo of insight and conclusion. Instead my brain was constantly fighting the book thinking, where am I now, is this snippet important or that one?
  
  Content
  The depth of each idea is therefore so unsatisfying. I want to spend money on a book to get further depth on a topic, and this just made me work so hard for the insight. The authors do a good job surveying current thought on the topic, but a sentence here about Adam Grant or a a quick picture about Seligman's 3Ps left me feel like this was a buffet of snippets of other people's ideas. It's hard for me to point out what specifically the authors are adding to this space, except to articulate that emotion is important at work. It is, and thank you for making that statement, but this book will not be the reference I use to make the argument to my colleagues.
  
  This is an important topic, and the illustrations are good. (thus a 2 star rating) . But this isn't the book to start the revolution that's needed. I ultimately feel tricked by the business publishing industry that took successful blog content, repackaged it in a common format with varying colors, pictures, and a take away section, and smattered some good endorsements. Penguin, I want my time back.
• Everyone should read this book, if you’re just entering the workforce, the CEO or someone in between. It’s helpful for millennials and their bosses to bridge the communication divide. The comics are brillant and I’ve alreay used a couple in some feedback sessions. Highly recommend as gifts or for self improvement. So many times during this book I thought “wow that’s me” or “oops, I better stop/start doing that”.
• Once upon a time not long time ago, I bumped into the Instagram account of LizAndMollie. I couldn’t help but anticipating the next clever illustration-explanation. I bought the book and just didn’t want to put it down till I finish it. I appreciated deeply how it covers most aspects of emotions at work with simplicity, humor and resourcefulness. I can sense the research and refinement that was done to put this through. As someone that has read some of the indicated books and articles that are mentioned, I felt the mashup was not only useful to develop a broad understanding but also a point of reference to go back to when I want to expand my knowledge. Last but not least I kept some practical tips that can be actionable right away (like starting a decision journal). Would recommend this to anyone that would like to feel inspired about knowing more about emotions.
• As a young professional in a workplace with a lot of older colleagues, it can be hard to know how much of my "self" to bring to and share at work. This book provides helpful tips for how to handle different work situations and embrace the emotions that we often try to push away. The book is full of hilarious and relatable comics that made realize how universal many of my feelings are and the authors' personal anecdotes are interesting and entertaining!
• It's like "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk", but for adults talking to each-other.
• Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy courageously acknowledge how our human emotions don’t just fade away once we pull into our workplace parking lots, and then take it a step further to address, “What happens then?!”“No Hard Feelings,” is an insightful, witty, and relatable read, providing useful tools and tactics that anyone could implement for managing emotions at work.
  Additionally, the illustrations are incredibly accurate depictions of some of the most common, real-world, sticky situations and keep you smiling through each chapter. A must read for anyone in the workplace and a great gift for teams looking to connect in more meaningful and effective ways.
• The illustrations are great, which makes this book fun to read. The book is also relatively quick to read. The authors go over some important topics about workplace interaction. Throughout the book, the authors cite the research they are basing their work on. So it's a good starting point that covers a lot of research and best practices on emotions in the workplace. If you want to dig deeper, just follow the footnotes.
• There has been a lot written recently about the relationship millennials have to work; in a nutshell, we're consumed by it. Liz and Mollie have an alternative point of view be less passionate about your job. This is just one counterintuitive, but really helpful, piece of career advice shared in their book. If you find yourself thinking about how much of your whole self to bring to work, when and how to share what you're really feeling, how to make decisions and find motivation, and how to be both a teammate and a leader, this book will provide a wealth of insight for you. Combining personal anecdotes, social science research, business case studies, and amazing illustrations, No Hard Feelings is funny, true (funny because it's true), and source of comfort and guidance in navigating all the emotions of the modern workplace.

• Voltaire had an interesting and sometimes tumultuous relation with "The Church" and religious thought of his time. In Candide, he takes great pains to ridicule the writings of both Milton and Alexander Pope, more specifically the latter in An Essay on Man, in which both writers attempt to "vindicate the ways of God to man". To understand this, or better, to have read these writings will further illuminate what Voltaire is attempting in Candide.
  Candide is the protagonist and is a seemingly good-hearted but rather simple fellow whose mentor, Pangloss, teaches him that no matter what happens it is always for the best. As a note, pay attention to each of the main characters names as they seem to me to have a descriptive quality to them, e.g. Pan, meaning "all" and gloss from the Greek glossa, meaning tongue, to get a name that roughly means "all talk".
  The story begins with Candide and his love interest being suddenly separated and the events of his life from there. What follows in the story is a series of horrible events mixed with some virtuous ones that Pangloss continuously explains to Candide that whatever happens is for the best.
  Even if you have no philosophical interest, the book is both funny and sad, entertaining yet thought provoking with a couple of memorable passages. I consider it a pretty good read and, as a bonus, a quick one.

  This review will address the newly issued edition of Candide that has been released by Open Road Media as well as give an overview of editions of Candide available for the and available on .
  
  Many versions of well-known classic books are available. For books available in the public domain, as is the case for Candide, oftentimes these versions are available for free or for very low price.
  
  Some of these editions are of low quality and have various issues that make them less desirable for those who like to read classics on their s. When I am looking for a classic book to purchase for my , it is usually a minor research project to determine which one I think will be the 'best' for my reading, and sometimes I end up purchasing more than one version in order to get one that is well presented and formatted for the .
  
  This is a relatively short book, normally about 100 pages in printed form, and not a difficult read. This edition is well produced, the publishers website claims that it has been professionally proofread, and I have detected no errors myself (such as often appear in books which have been scanned and published without careful check).
  
  This Open Road Media version of Candide appears to be the most common version offered on and uses the translation by Philip Little (see note below) which was originally published by Modern Library in 1918 and is public domain and readily available online (see for example Project Gutenberg link below). It includes the following
  
  - short introduction written by the translator Philip Littell
  - complete text of Candide (presumably also translated by Philip Littell)
  - table of contents is included and functions properly, with book 'locations' indicated but not page numbers
  
  It does not include footnotes, which the Gutenberg Library (online) version of Candide does include (see comments section below for link to the Gutenberg Library website). The two versions are otherwise identical as far as I can tell, and the Gutenberg Library version indicates where edits have been made in order to correct typos, and those corrections have all also been included in this Open Road Media version.
  
  (I note that this edition does not indicate which translation is used, nor does the Open Road media website provide that information, however it does show Philip Littell as the author of the introduction and several references I've found also indicate Littell is the translator. However, the NY Public Library article on Candide (see link in comments below) refers to this as an anonymous translation, saying "NYPL is using the most widely available e-text of the book, from the anonymous translation published by the Modern Library in 1918, available on Project Gutenberg").
  
  Candide has been well reviewed on and is available in many different editions, both for the and in print. The listings on with the greatest number of reviews are listed below. I would refer to these listings and the accompanying reviews for discussion of the book itself, which is generally regarded as a major classic and which has been included on many lists of 'best' or 'most influential classic novels

  Candide was written by the French philosopher Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet) and first published in 1789, in France. It has been translated into English numerous times. I am not going to attempt to judge which of the various translations might be preferable for one reason or another. I do list some of the translations currently available below, for those interested. Generally they can be sampled using 's 'Look Inside" feature to get an idea of the quality of the translation, and in some cases the customer reviews here on will also address the quality of the translation. I do not know that there are huge differences in the various translations but I'll include in the notes below any comments I do run across that might indicate a preference for any of the translations (some works, War and Peace for example, have strong points of view from different scholars regarding which translation is more true to the original writing). Not all translations are available in editions.

  - this 1947 translation by John Butt available in Penguin edition (I do not find this translation available for ) ( Candide Or Optimism (Penguin Classics) Listed on as ASIN 0140440046 - Candide) The Annenberg Learner website considers this to be the recommended version, saying "This is our recommended edition. This 1947 translation by John Everett Butt provides a clear and stylish English equivalent for the mordant original. This edition has an introduction by the translator, a noted scholar and literary editor, who was Regius Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature at Edinburgh University." See [...]
  - This 1961 translation by Daniel M. Frame (I do not find this translation available for ) (Listed on as ASIN 0451531159 - Candide, Zadig and Selected Stories) which includes 15 additional stories by Voltaire.
  - a newer 2005 translation by Theo Cuffe also released by Penguin and available on (Listed on as ASIN B00EK28X1C - Candide, or Optimism (Penguin Classics) or (Listed on as ASIN B00B7NP1HQ - Candide Or Optimism (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition). These Penguin editions for do include a number of supplementary notes (translators note, note on the text, note on names, map, appendices, chronology, further reading) but do not include any additional works by Voltaire in addition to Candide.
  - translation by Peter Constantine available in Everyman's Library edition (I do not find this translation available for ) (Listed on as ASIN 067941746X - Candide and Other Stories (Everyman's Library Classics & Contemporary Classics), includes other stories by Voltaire (according to one of the reviews the included stories are Micromegas, Zadig, What Pleases the Ladies, The Ingenu, The White Bull).
  - 1990 translation by Roger Pearson available in Oxford World Classics edition (the first link is an earlier edition published by Oxford and the second link is a edition that is a newer version of the same thing) (Listed on as ASIN 0192807269 - Candide and Other Stories (Oxford World's Classics), or the more recent printing (Listed on as ASIN B005JJ9RME - Candide and Other Stories (Oxford World's Classics) includes several other stories by Voltaire (Micromegas, Zadig, What Pleases the Ladies, The Ingenue, and The White Bull).
  - Norton Critical Edition, translated by Robert M. Adams and including extensive accompanying essays giving background and criticism, and first published in 1966 (I do not find this translation available for ) (Listed on as ASIN 0393960587 - Candide (A Norton Critical Edition). This edition does not include other works by Voltaire but does, as mentioned, include a great deal of supplementary material on Candide.
  
  My opinion is that this is a fully satisfactory version of Candide for those readers interested in this book and wanting an inexpensive copy for their . It is being offered for free at the present time on but will probably be sold at a slightly higher price once this 'introductory' period has been completed. It is essentially equivalent to the several other 99 cent versions presently available for the , from Dover Publications, and a couple from unidentified publishers and simply showing " Digital Services".
• I first saw the musical adaptation of "Candide" on Broadway, in the 1970's, and loved it. I decided to do it justice by reading Voltaire's original novel, and lo! The book has an entire story well beyond the musical adaptation! I found it to be not only instructive, nut enlightening, with a message that applies to the modern world as well. It is funny, pitiful, and a fast read, worthy of any educated individual, especially in our senior years.
  Recommended.
• The lesson from this story is that; Kings and Queens lose kingdoms and thrones, knights lose honors and reputation, reduced to commoners, Officials lose offices and privileges, the rich squander money on food, pleasures and material artifacts in the hope of buying happiness that is never found. Asking too many questions about why is life the way it is, why are things the way they, why events the way they is another waste of time that reveal none of the answers sought and aspired to or sought. The end result of the rapid events and tragedies in Voltaire`s Candid, Is that the key to enjoy life is to be content with what you have, and content with you have is in the simplest and least desired things in life. A small piece of land with a small country house, will give you more pleasure, serenity, honor and peace of mind, in ploughing the land and eating what simple product it may yield, than all the kingdoms and riches of life!

• Most books about survival and outdoor skills don’t become “bestsellers”. But somehow Bushcraft 101 made it onto the 2014 New York Times list of Best Selling Sports Books. Why was that? In our opinion this book was popular because it’s a good, basic beginner bushcraft/wilderness survival book that can also be enjoyed by an experienced outdoors person because of the author’s credentials, writing style and content.
  
  Written by Dave Canterbury, known to many people as one of the original two survivalists on the TV show “Dual Survival,” where he was teamed with Cody Lundin (Dave was the one that wore shoes), the book focuses on Dave’s view of bushcraft; a view that means taking advantage of what nature makes available to you and using a minimum of gear to survive and thrive in the natural world, carrying “the knowledge and skills needed to create items straight from the landscape”.
  
  The main way that Dave’s book differs from the first two books on our favorites list is due to his focus on the skills necessary to thrive in the woods – not just the skills essential to surviving in the wild in an emergency. Because of this much of the book is based on Canterbury’s “Five Cs of Survivability” – items chosen since they are extremely hard to make in the wild and directly impact controlling your body’s core temperature. Dave’s Five Cs are
  
  1) Cutting Tools – to manufacture needed items and process food
  2) Covering Elements – to create a microclimate of protection from the elements
  3) Combustion Devices – for creating the fires needed not only to preserve and cook food, but also to make medicines and provide needed warmth
  4) Containers – to carry water over distances or to protect collected food sources
  5) Cordages – for bindings and lashings
  
  The book also shows how Dave has a “systems” mindset (e.g. never carry anything unless it can perform multiple functions).

  Dave’s detailed section on Tools is especially helpful for people new to camping. We also like Dave’s “Four Ws” relating to setting up a camp – Wood, Water, Wind and Widowmakers. Having 256 pages, measuring 5½ x ¾ x 8½ inches and weighing ~10 ounces this is probably a book that you learn from but do not take on the trail with you. Although shorter than all of our other recommended books, Bushcraft 101 is not intended to be all encompassing – since it is only intended to cover the “20 percent of bushcraft that is of the most value”.
• Not a lot of Bushcraft technique taught. Things were generally glossed over and if you packed everything that was recommended to take with you you would have more in your pack than you have in your home. I was hoping for some very primitive detailed information and the simply fell short.
• This book contains lots of useful information, but falls short on details of many things it mentions. I guess it's a good starting point, but you will need other books or additional training to actually learn how to do some of the things mentioned in the book.
  
  For example, there is a section about knots, but only a few of the mentioned knots have diagrams, and none of the diagrams show step by step how to tie them. Another example is the section on primitive traps and how great they are, especially with the use of toggle triggers, but there aren't any examples of how to set up any primitive traps using toggle triggers, or even a description of what a toggle trigger is.
  
  I also picked up three other bush-craft books from Canterbury, and I hope some of those will go deeper into some of this stuff.
• Very disappointed. The information is general, not very clear or concise, hard to follow and woefully lacking illustrations. Cover design was great and I judged this book by its cover when buying it. Don’t do that.
• There was really very little information you probably don't already know but if you need the very basic equipment list for camping (almost half the book) this is for you. It gives all you could ever want to know about what you need to pack in your backpack for camping but goes over other basics (like trapping) in a cursory manner and with expectations that you have a camping supply store nearby to purchase a ready made trap. I was really disappointed.. There was a very long discourse on how fire is achieved and the science behind it. I think there might have been a bit of a struggle finding enough material.
• There are so many things I love about this
  1) quality and cover texture this should almost fall in a category between hrs back and paperback it's one of the most well made paperbacks I've seen
  2) the wide array of survival topics that are covered
  3) the book uses diagrams in almost all its explanations so if you really needed to use this info in the wilderness you would have a diagram to follow to make sure you were doing it right
  4) and best of all PRICE!! I paid $10 and as pointed out in my last photo msrp for this book is &16.99 )!!!
• If you’re new to woodcraft/bushcraft, or just interested in learning a few new tricks in the wilderness, this a GREAT book. Canterbury provides great explanations and insight, and provides a lot of things to consider that you otherwise may not have.
  Provides a great breakdown on gear, fire making methods, shelter building, food, and plenty more. It’s packed with information. Have read through it, and will often just flip open to a random point and reread parts when I’m bored or going to bed. He provides some good illustrations, and instructions, and is just a great resource. I keep it in my pack as point of a reference, and just for ideas for projects/things to practice while in the woods and camping. I also highly recommend checking out his YouTube channel.
• I'm not sure what the target audience for this book might be. It's a broad-based overview of outdoor stuff and skills, broad enough to cover most topics, but brief enough that a) it's not 15,000 pages long and b) there's probably not enough detail on any topic for a newbie to become enlightened. It's not that the author is wrong -- and he clearly knows his stuff -- it's just that he doesn't seem to have struck a balance such that one could pack this book in a bug-out-bag and end up OK.

• This book looks at our food system from so many different angles. It sheds light on a topic that most people don't care about. People say they are interested in farm to table, yet they only care about the farm and the table. This book fills in the gaps. It explains why our food system is so complicated. It includes pros and cons. It also spends a lot of time thinking about the future. There is a lot of research and development going into agriculture technology and logistics. These investments will revolutionize the way we eat and our relationship with food. Robyn is amazing at sparking conversation. She gives the reader enough information to develop their own opinions on our food system and the future.
• Great overview of the many elements that make up our global food supply chain...and the shifting consumer preferences and enabling technologies that will create disruptive changes across the food industry. I especially enjoyed the framework used to describe the "ingredients that keep food moving" - reliability, trust, adaptability and technology. And the end chapter that outlines potential future outcomes is fascinating - especially the discussion on how last-mile food delivery could be radically influenced by local (rooftop and in-home) "farming". Dr. Metcalfe is a great storyteller!
